Lovely lava...crater glaze tests 2

Some interesting stoneware crater and textural glazes tests. I think there may be something workable in these tests for a sculptural piece. The colours are more muted and stoney, but it might just work on a larger sculptural piece.. I really enjoyed seeing these results, reminds me of the need to experiment!

Volcanic high fire glaze tests

You may remember a year or so back I was experimenting with some lava or volcanic glaze tests. Well it takes ages to get anything done, but I packed a kiln load of tests and hey presto-...the kiln mis fired! It's an on going fault...but it went up to 1170 degrees c instead of 1240. I've unpacked the kiln and restarted it. Not before I took out these interesting tiles. So far I've only ever achieved a tin white in a lava or crater style. I'm pretty pleased with these and also the crawl style effect. This could open new possibilities for me and my work, so I am pretty pleased and a bit excited. 1170 may be the way to go...

Raku workshop

I held a Raku workshop for my Pottery class this week. Lots of fun, lots of burning...a bit too much smoke...some horse hair raku...all good fun! It's a bit crowded at my work studio...so next time we will be holding firings at Brick House Studios in Silver End, Essex. Lots more space to make smoke and fire! Anyway a great time had by all.
